Social Emotional Learning
What is SEL?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (Collaborate for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning – CASEL).
5 Competencies – (CASEL)
Self-awareness – The ability to accurately recognize one’s emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior. The ability to accurately assess one’s strengths and limitation, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.”

Self-Management – The ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations – effectively managing stress, controlling impulses, and motivating oneself. The ability to set and work toward personal and academic goals

Social awareness - The ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The ability to understand social and ethical norms for behavior and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports.

Relationship skills - The ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. i3 Grant
Nome Public Schools has received the Federal i3 grant to implement a Culturally Responsive Social and Emotional Learning (CRESEL) curriculum within Nome Public Schools. Nome Public Schools has partnered with Alaska Association of School Boards, First Alaskans Institute, and Alaska After-School Network to assist with training and implementation of this new grant.
The i3 grant has four key activities that focus on successful implementation of a Culturally Responsive Social and Emotional Learning. The four key areas are:
- District SEL Leadership Team
- School-Wide SEL
- Out of School Time SEL (Alaska After-School Network Partner).
- Culturally Responsive Processes and Practices (First Alaskans Regional Partners)

Students will have a greater sense of self and belonging through strong community partnerships, engagement, skill development, increased positive interactions, and intentional supports.
