Jamie Burgess, Superintendent of Schools
Education is Jamie’s second profession, but definitely her favorite job ever! Jamie was born and raised in California and Colorado, earning her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Metropolitan State University of Denver, followed by a M.S. in Biochemistry, Biophysics and Genetics from the University of Colorado. After years of running her own oil & gas accounting business, and a family move to Great Falls, Montana, she returned to school to earn her Secondary Education certification from the University of Great Falls, and was recruited to Phoenix Arizona in 2003 to become a chemistry teacher for the Agua Fria Union High School District. She returned to school twice more, once to earn her Principal Certification at Arizona State University and again to earn a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from Concordia University. After 10 wonderful years in the classroom, being a department chair, Speech & Debate Coach and National Honor Society sponsor, she accepted a position as Principal of Coldwater Academy/Director of Non-Traditional Education in her district and laid the foundations for online and blended learning in that district.
In 2015, Jamie moved to Akiachak, Alaska to become the Director of Curriculum & Instruction for the Yupiit School District, and then in 2016 came to Nome as the Director of Federal Programs, Instruction & Accountability. She finished her Superintendent Program through Brandman University, and in February of 2019 she was asked to serve as the Interim Superintendent and in April was selected as the permanent Superintendent.
Jamie loves walking on the beach at Nome, playing piano, all things geeky and nerdy, and best of all spending time with her husband, kids and grandkids.
