Biography

Hello! My name is Sarah Liben and I am the high school biology teacher at Nome-Beltz. While I was born, raised and earned my bachelor of science degree in the state of Connecticut, I have lived in Alaska since 2013. My journey through the state began in Yakutat, a small community in the southeast, where I was hired by the Forest Service to serve as a fisheries and wildlife intern. I fell in love with the area and by the conclusion of this internship, I had accepted a position by the City and Borough of Yakutat to work on a three-year project developing and implementing K-6 place-based science lessons for the school district. It was working on this project that I fell in love with teaching, so I decided it was a perfect time to go back to school. This turned into a six-year plan and by the conclusion of the spring 2018 semester, I had earned a Master’s in Natural Resource Management in Geography as well as a Master’s in Secondary Education program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. After speaking with Principal Berkeley at the job fair in Anchorage this year I knew Nome was an area I would love to work and live in, so when I was lucky enough to receive a job offer at the high school I jumped at the opportunity. But who exactly is this new biology teacher you ask? Well, if I had to summarize my personality in three traits I would say that I am passionate about life (especially when it comes to working with kids), energetic, and open-minded. I am very excited to have the opportunity to work in this school district and become a part of this community.
