Jamie Burgess, Superintendent of Schools

Profile

Education is Jamie’s second profession, but definitely her favorite job ever! Jamie was born and raised in California and Colorado, earning her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Metropolitan State University of Denver, followed by a M.S. in Biochemistry, Biophysics and Genetics from the University of Colorado. After years of running her own oil & gas accounting business, and a family move to Great Falls, Montana, she returned to school to earn her Secondary Education certification from the University of Great Falls, and was recruited to Phoenix Arizona in 2003 to become a chemistry teacher for the Agua Fria Union High School District. She returned to school twice more, once to earn her Principal Certification at Arizona State University and again to earn a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from Concordia University. After 10 wonderful years in the classroom, being a department chair, Speech & Debate Coach and National Honor Society sponsor, she accepted a position as Principal of Coldwater Academy/Director of Non-Traditional Education in her district and laid the foundations for online and blended learning in that district.

In 2015, Jamie moved to Akiachak, Alaska to become the Director of Curriculum & Instruction for the Yupiit School District, and then in 2016 came to Nome as the Director of Federal Programs, Instruction & Accountability. She finished her Superintendent Program through Brandman University, and in February of 2019 she was asked to serve as the Interim Superintendent and in April was selected as the permanent Superintendent.

Jamie loves walking on the beach at Nome, playing piano, all things geeky and nerdy, and best of all spending time with her husband, kids and grandkids.
Superintendent Message for the 2024-2025 School Year

Joyful greetings to the community of Nome as we begin a new school year!  This year will bring new teachers, some new faces in administration, and a renewed focus on student academic achievement.  We are excited to launch our new instructional model and become a Visible Learning District, based in the work of John Hattie.  We will continue our focus on literacy at Nome Elementary School, endeavoring to meet the expectation that all students are reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

Nome-Beltz Middle/High School will be focused on supporting students for their post high school plans and ensuring all students are ready for college, trade school, the workplace, the military, or wherever and whatever they choose.  Our sports teams are ready to continue their traditions of excellence as we finished celebrating the Boys' Basketball's second state championship in the last three years, and our nascent track and field team will continue to grow as well.

We look forward to welcoming all of our students back - school begins on September 3rd!
