Welcome

Welcome to Nome Elementary School! We are a K-5 school of roughly 330 students located on the southern Seward Peninsula coast on Norton Sound of the Bering Sea. Nome, founded April 9, 1901,  supports the population of 3,600 and is a first class city.  Our mascot, the Nanauyaat, means polar bear cubs in the local Inupiaq language dialect. 

 

With the solid literacy curriculum, supported by Bookworms, and math curriculum, Eureka, in place, we expect the students to thrive.  Additionally, we are pleased to have two Title I Reading Specialists with one paraprofessional further supporting students in literacy.  NES offers several special classes including Cultural Studies, Physical Education,  Art, and Library.  These specials along with high-quality classroom instruction using Cooperative Learning Structures from Kagan to reinforce Social Emotional Learning and technology helps to develop responsible global citizens.  Teachers lead field trips berry picking, climbing Anvil Mountain, visiting Kegoayah Kozga Public Library, Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum, the beach, and much more.  The current Nome Elementary school first opened its doors in 1988 after moving from Old St. Joes Park.  We are so proud to have this amazing facility and welcome the community to visit and volunteer with us and share in the joy of seeing Nome youth grow and learn.
